Here are some recommendations that might help you as you prepare to bring your new puppy home. We have included not only the food we use and suggest you start with, but puppy toys and training items that we personally use and highly recommend for a successful transition. Commissions may be earned on some items.
Nutrena Loyall Puppy, purple bag, is the puppy food we use until our pups are around 1 years old. If you decide to use another food, it is best to transition slowly to prevent stomach upset. You can order from Amazon and put in auto ship and they deliver right to your door. Here is the link! (paid link) https://amzn.to/3ADyAGm
Goldens are hard chewers so you will want something sturdy. It’s OK to get soft cuddly toys but you will want to supervise to make sure they don’t swallow anything from them. My favorite chews are deer and elk antlers, which you can order from me here: https://www.redferncompanions.com/shop
Wire crates are perfect for crate/potty training, and giving your puppy a place that is theirs alone. A crate should be big enough that pups can stand up comfortably and turn around in and that is all. Crates that have a wall so that you can make it bigger as your pup grows are ideal for the growth spurts your pups go through. I like these wire crates: https://amzn.to/3u7bbKU (paid link)
Interactive toys such as balls, ropes, squeaky toys, etc. that let you play fetch or tug with your pups, are a great way for bonding and exercise- Here are a few of my favorites. I never leave my dogs unsupervised with these toys: https://amzn.to/3zD4z8b
Your golden will shed but regular brushing helps prevent them from leaving hair all over the place. They go through two big shedding periods: spring time and fall but combing does help. Here is the shedding blade that I recommend: https://amzn.to/3zDaudF (paid link)
This training book, “The Power of Positive Training” by Pat Miller is so helpful!! Using this, in addition to our going home videos, will insure a well-mannered and obedient pup. Get it from Amazon or on Audible https://amzn.to/3ARsZMV
I use our Red Fern beef Training
Treats. My pups love them and they are soft and easy to tear into smaller pieces. They are also good for my pups and I know exactly what is in them. You can find them here: https://www.redferncompanions.com/shop
These will need to grow with your puppy so you will end up buying more of these eventually. I really like the feel of these biothane leashes and collars found at https://pimpedoutpup.com/ and use the code redfern10 for a 10% discount!
I love these raised beds to designate as PLACE for pups to go to while I’m busy or they are just hanging out. This gives them their own spot to go that’s not interfering with guests or dinnertime and also makes a clear boundary while training your pups to stay. https://amzn.to/3AyHsNo
If you are using your crate for your pup to sleep in, a blanket or towel is fine to use for inside as a cushion. Some pups chew them up so watch them carefully. If you are not going to use a crate for your pup to sleep, a big comfy pet bed is a good alternative. https://amzn.to/3AFe6Nh (paid link)
We use Nuvet vitamins for our pups and our older dogs. If you use Nuvet vitamins, it increases my warranty from two years to four years for certain genetic disorders. Here is the link to order the Nuvet vitamins:
https://www.nuvetlabs.com/order_new2/login.asp and enter code 87590 and then you can make your account and order.
If you decide you don't want to use the wire crate, this is another option. These are also great for traveling with you pups in the car. This is what we use for crate training new pups because they are enclosed and prevent stimulus. Here is the link! https://amzn.to/3CHOkbX
Not only are probiotics great for people, they are great for your pups! They boost immunity and help your pup stay healthy. These powder packs are very palatable to your pups. All you do is sprinkle the powder over your pups food each day. One packet lasts for about 3 meals. https://amzn.to/3ACmj56 (paid link)
Nail trimmers are a great addition to your grooming kit. Puppies nails grow super fast and it saves time and money if you are able to trim them yourself. For my really young pups, I use regular toenail clippers. For my older pups, I use the following: https://amzn.to/2Ztypje
Training harnesses are a great way to let the world know your puppy is in training and to encourage people to avoid interaction with your pet so your pup can concentrate on their training. You can find them here: https://amzn.to/2XYrEW5 (paid link)
When traveling with your young puppies in airplanes, you are required to use a soft-sided carrier that will fit under the seat in front of you. This is the carrier my pet nannies and I use: https://amzn.to/3i2J8HN (paid link)
Masks aren't the only fun things you can find at www.petparty.co. They have socks, mugs, oven mittens, and almost anything you can think of to put your cute pet's face on! These make great gifts! Use the code REDFERN20 for a 20% discount!
Goldens love water and where there's water, there's usually mud. Check up above for my favorite shampoo, but if you also want a fancy pet blow dryer, this industrial strength blower is the quick way to go: https://amzn.to/3EJLAN4
Something super fun for pups, older dogs, and you is agility courses. This adds interest to your pups training and is a great way to exercise, not only their mind, but their body, as well. There are several kits to choose from but we have this one: https://amzn.to/3i1DuFZ (paid link)
Pet booties are a great idea if you live in a place that gets super cold or super hot. These booties protect your pup's feet in any weather conditions and are water-proof. https://amzn.to/2XWLIIz (paid link)
